Two standards exist for women in Yemen: one for foreign women, and another for native Yemenis.  Western women are allowed privileges and experiences completely denied to their Yemeni counterparts.  The term “third gender,” in this case, refers to Western women being treated the same way as men: invited to chew qat or into discussions, usually off-limits for Yemeni women.
