Drafting a New Story: Women's Rights in the Middle East

Submissions Welcome! Please submit your original pieces of non-fiction, fiction, poetry, art, or political analysis.

Yesterday, Abdel Muti al-Bayyumi, a leading scholar at Egypt’s Al-Azhar University expressed his support for France’s new ban on the niqab.  He said the niqab “has no basis in Islamic law and there is nothing in the Koran or Sunna that supports it” and that those who wear it do “not give a good impression of Islam.”

Tell us what you think! Does the ban on the niqab restrict individual and religious freedoms? Does it promote equality for women? Take our poll or leave a comment!
